Numbers 21:6, 8Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died…And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.” And from John 3:14-15 – And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

When I first read these serpent verses, I was somewhat perplexed as to what to do with them. And while many of us are familiar with John 3:16, verses 14 and 15 allude to these odd verses in Numbers. But for me, these earlier verses in the third chapter of John’s Gospel place Jesus’ crucifixion and subsequent resurrection in a clear healing context.

Healing God, help us be agents of resurrection to the people we see today. Amen.
