The lectionary for this week includes: Joel 2:23-32; Psalm 65; 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 and Luke 18:9-14. Alternate selections include Jeremiah 14:7-10, 19-22 and Psalm 84:1-7.
Joel 2:23-24 – O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the LORD your God; for he has given the early rain for your vindication, he has poured down for you abundant rain, the early and the later rain, as before. The threshing floors shall be full of grain, the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.
One of my routes to work takes me through a poorer part of Memphis. Many urban neighborhoods like this one are devoid of grocery stores. In this neighborhood, there is an abandoned lot that has a number of raised vegetable beds. This is creative way to get healthy, fresh vegetables into a neighborhood that can’t rely on a chain grocery store to provide affordable food to the community.
Creator God, help us creatively share your abundance with those less fortunate than we are. Amen.
