The lectionary selections for this coming Sunday include Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15; Psalm 91:1-6, 14-16; 1 Timothy 6:6-19 and Luke 16:19-31. Alternate selections include Amos 6:1a, 4-7 and Psalm 146.
Jeremiah 32:13-15 – In their presence I charged Baruch saying, “Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Take these deeds, both this sealed deed of purchase and this open deed, and put them in an earthenware jar, in order that they may last for a long time. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Houses and fields and vineyards shall again be bought in this land.”
At the time Jeremiah is writing this, the city of Jerusalem is under siege by the Babylonian army. There was once a commercial for a church here in Memphis, where the preacher exclaimed, “God is working his purpose out!” Jeremiah is reminding the people of God that while times are really hard (and staying that way for some time), there will come a time when their land will be returned to them.
Almighty God, grant us patience that comes from an assurance that you are ultimately in control. Amen.
