Job Description

The Well Specialist’s overall purpose is to provide quality care and education for children at The Well, Church Health’s pediatric prevention and wellness education program. The Specialist also provides guidance to Staff regarding daily tasks, policies and procedures, training to volunteers about The Well, and supervision of the department in the Manager’s or Supervisor’s absence by serving as Leader on Duty. Activities should address, but are not limited to, the six root causes focused on in the program: Physical Activity/Nutrition, Safety/Violence, and Body Image/Self-Esteem.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching children 6 weeks to 12 years old and individual/ group exploration activities involving topics such as nutrition, physical activity, self-esteem, body image, safety education, and violence prevention.
  • Teaching children (ages 6 weeks – 12 years) in individual exploration and group teaching activities in The Well’s facilities and other environments; including implementation of curriculum and keeping children safe at all times.
  • Planning appropriate programming, lessons and activities that are cornerstones of The Well’s prevention and wellness programming.
  • Researching information and reviewing materials available for educating children in the areas of body, mind and spirit.
  • Finding appropriate materials for use in The Well program based on the needs of our clients and currents trends in educational research including the information gathered to organize special events in The Well work area.
  • Consult with The Well’s staff regarding lesson plans, schedules and promotional materials while providing guidance and teaching tips.
  • Reviewing and revising staff work in cooperation with the Supervisor if needed.
  • Collaborating with the Manager and Supervisor to update all schedules to make sure that there is appropriate coverage in the work area.
  • Organizing paperwork and data on the children in The Well’s programs to keep staff abreast of any and all physical/medical issues children may have, as well as any medications they may take and/or any existing allergies.
  • Communicating with community agencies, volunteers, schools, special interest groups and others with information about Church Health and The Well.

Qualifications

  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the following areas are well suited for this placement: Education, Child Development, Dance, Family Studies, Nutrition, Health Promotion, Health Sciences, Population Health, Exercise Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, or other related degree is required.
  • Bilingual Preferred.
  • Experience and training with children in health education, nutrition education, and cooking.
  • Experience with a wide variety of ages providing direct service to children and communicating with their families preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year working directly with children.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively by telephone and computer, attention to detail, strong computer and data entry skills, team orientated, willingness to learn, and a strong sense of professionalism.
  • Knowledgeable about children’s development and appropriate activities to offer.
  • Strong desires to work with children of all ages, backgrounds, races, religions, and abilities.
  • Trained on different approaches and methods to teaching and learning.
  • Well informed about issues that affect the growth, safety and health of children in body, mind and spirit.

Compensation

Church Health offers competitive wages to attract and retain employees with great skills and ideas that align with our mission, and to reward achievement. Regular performance reviews are held between each employee and his or her direct manager to ensure that achievements are recognized, and that goals and expectations are being met.

Medical, Vision & Dental

Church Health offers employees working 20 or more hours per week group major medical, vision and dental coverage, effective the 1st of the month following 30 days of employment.

Medical and vision is currently offered through BlueCross BlueShield of TN. Dependent coverage is also available. The organization currently pays approximately 50% – 80% of premiums dependent upon coverage level and number of hours worked per week.

Affordable dental coverage is currently available through Delta Dental of TN, and spouse and dependent dental coverage is also available.

Flexible Spending Accounts & Health Savings Accounts

Church Health offers two flexible spending account options, allowing you to save and pay for you and your family’s eligible medical, dental, vision and childcare expenses.

For participants in the High Deductible Health Plan, Church Health offers an HSA. Church Health also offers a one-time lump sum and a per pay period match for those who enroll in an HSA!

Basic Life & AD&D Insurance

Church Health offers basic life and AD&D insurance at no cost to employees. This also covers a spouse and dependent children at no cost to the employee. Employees may purchase additional supplemental group term life and AD&D for themselves, their spouses, and dependent children.

Short-Term and Long-Term Disability

Church Health offers short term and long term disability coverage at no cost to employees after 90 days of employment. Short term coverage pays 70% of an employee’s eligible pay for up to 11 weeks. Long term coverage pays 60% of an employee’s eligible wages after short term has been exhausted. Employees must be on an approved leave of absence.

401k

Employees working 20 or more hours per week may participate in a 401(K) deferred compensation plan that is designed to provide income for all covered employees beyond the working years. Church Health will contribute a 3% safe harbor after one year of service and match up to an additional 1% if the employee participates.

Paid Vacation

Paid Time Off (PTO) is a benefit provided to full-time and regular part-time employees each year based on years of service and scheduled hours per week. PTO is accrued throughout the year and employees are eligible to use their accrued PTO after 90 days of employment. Employees working less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for PTO.

Church Health also observes 10 paid holidays per year.

All employees and members of their household have access to Church Health’s EAP provided by Lincoln Financial Group.  This service offers free and confidential assistance on topics ranging from stress management to substance abuse.

Staff Health Program
