Margaret Rose Bailey
College: University of Tennessee
Major: Kinesiology (2019)

Biography

My name is Margaret Rose Bailey, and I am one of The Well scholars for this year. I was born and raised right here in Memphis, up until I moved to Knoxville to get my undergraduate degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville (go vols!). There I majored in Kinesiology and minored in Public Health and am very excited to be able to put the two together while working in The Well this year.

During my time at UT, I developed a passion for serving the underserved, and ensuring that all people have access to everything that is necessary to live a healthy lifestyle. Church Health embodies these values, and strives to provide a holistic health care experience, while also focusing on prevention, which I believe is a crucial, and often overlooked, aspect of the health field. I love that Church Health also focuses on spiritual health, as my time as a Young Life leader in Knoxville showed me how impactful a healthy spiritual life can be. I plan to get my Masters in Public Health following my year here at Church Health, and hope that my time here will help me to decide what area of the public health field I would like to go into.

In my free time I love to read, spend time with family and friends, travel, scuba dive, listen to music, explore the outdoors, and enjoy delicious food. I am very excited to be back in this city that I love and get plugged into the community here. There’s just something special about Memphis, and I believe that Church Health is one of the things that makes it so.

I am very excited to work with my fellow scholars and employees of Church Health, as well as get to know the wonderful patients we serve throughout the community of Memphis. I hope to learn more about non-profit healthcare, as well as explore different areas of healthcare in order to determine what concentration I will get my Masters of Public Health in.

Biography

After living in Memphis TN for 18 years, I decided to go away to school at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. I recently graduated in May from the Honors College of Engineering at the university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering. My dream has always been to attend medical school once I graduated in hopes to one day become an OBGYN. When I realized that I did not want to go back to school immediately after graduation, I realized Church Health was the place destined for me. Because I grew up in Memphis, I will always see this city as my home and I will do anything I can to better the community and environment around me. Not only does Church Health do this, but it is also a place where everyone is welcome and treated as equal, which is why I felt it was my calling to apply for this position.

When I am not working, you can easily find me traveling, watching Family Feud, and playing with my dog, Rosie. I am always striving to spend time with the ones I love most, and I value my family more than anything else in this world. After only working a few short months at Church Health, I already consider this place my home. Not only do I hope that I can make an impact on this incredible organization, but I know that it will make a huge impact on me.

Virginia Byars
Hometown: Memphis, TN
College: Indiana University
Major: Neuroscience and Gender Studies

Born and raised in Memphis, I went away to school at Indiana University and received degrees in Neuroscience and Gender Studies. While I loved my time in the Midwest, I am so excited to be returning home and start serving the community that made me who I am. During my time at IU, I worked the crisis phone line for a domestic violence shelter which fueled my passion for working with individuals with limited access to public services, and I plan to find a similar organization in Memphis where I can volunteer my free time. I am especially excited to interact with patients at Church Health, and I believe my time as a scholar will give me invaluable experiences as I apply to medical school for the Fall 2020 cycle.

When I’m not volunteering or working on my medical school applications, you can find me watching Quentin Tarantino movies, cross stitching, or reading in my hammock.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
I am most looking forward to seeing what a holistic practice of medicine looks like in action and to learn how to best provide for underserved populations in Memphis. I am hoping to both gain meaningful clinical experiences and learn which areas of medicine are the most interesting to me.

Allie Hill
Hometown: Jackson, TN

Major: Biology

Biography

My name is Allie Hill, and I am planning to attend dental school following my year in the Church Health Scholar program. I am originally from Jackson, Tennessee but have been able to call Memphis my home for the past four years while attending Rhodes College. At Rhodes, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and was a member of the swim team. In addition to swimming, my hobbies include hiking, traveling, reading, and any time of exercise!

For the past two summers, I gained experience working as a dental intern in an office in Evanston, IL. While I loved working and gaining valuable skills in such a great city, something seemed to be missing. I wanted to be able to make a difference in people’s lives, especially those who were less fortunate than me. Over the years, I have realized how fortunate I have been to have easy access to great healthcare in my life. I was drawn to the Church Health organization because of its mission of providing accessible care to the underserved in Memphis. I am so excited to do what I love, and at the same time, help the people of a city so close to me.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
I am looking forward to gaining more dental experience in one of my favorite cities. I am also excited to be a part of improving the lives of the underserved through dentistry. I hope to gain even more of a passion for dentistry and form valuable friendships and connections along the way.

Georgie Huber
College: University of the South
Major: Eco-Biology & Russian

Biography

Georgie Huber is a recent college graduate from Sewanee, TN – a small rural college town on the Cumberland Plateau in Middle, TN. During her time at Sewanee, Georgie primarily focused on Ecological and Biological systems with firm interest in the interactions between human health and the environment. She spent three years working as a volunteer laboratory-tech in the Ecology lab at Sewanee as well as spent a summer studying on St. Catherine’s Island studying in a variety of biological fields.

During Georgie’s junior year, she became interesting in pursuing a career in medicine – which is ultimately how she has found herself at Church Health. After volunteering for a year in a Pediatric office in Sewanee, Georgie moved to Memphis and was informed about the scholars program with Church Health. She was drawn to the organization immediately. The model for healthy living, which is constructed by connecting the many facets of health, is exactly why Georgie wants to work in the medical field. She believes that “good” health is not simply defined by a person’s lack of physiological symptoms. Building relationships, seeking spiritual growth, and supporting emotional well-being are necessary as we strive to create healthier communities. It is necessary to support healing of both mind and body.

When Georgie is not at work, she enjoys cooking, gardening, and playing with her pets. She is an avid music lover having spent a large portion of her childhood learning how to play a variety of instruments. If she could sum up the perfect day it would be to take a long hike with her dogs, cook a homegrown meal for her family and friends while listening to a good playlist, and end up on the couch snuggled up to her cat Stewie.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
Learning how a non-profit health organization is run in addition to gaining experience and being mentored by physicians in a variety of fields. Gaining medical knowledge, leadership skills, and understanding of the work that is happening behind the scenes in an organization like Church Health.

My name is Abbie Price and I am from Wildwood, GA (about 5 minutes away from Chattanooga, TN). I graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, a women’s college, where I majored in biology. My greatest accomplishments were achieving 500 hours of community service and being awarded the Sullivan Award at graduation. My interest include medicine, animals, reading, and Disney. I have volunteered and multiple non-profit organizations in the last four years, and I am interested to see the behind-the-scenes aspects of how these companies work. Bio
I graduated from Christian Brothers in May of 2019 with a B.S. in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Cognitive Neuroscience. My future goal is to attend optometry school and pursue a residency in vision therapy. Before I attend optometry school, I had decided that I would take a gap year in order to further understand optometry and the health care profession in general. Tri-Beta at CBU has done a lot of work with Church Health and it is a great organization with an inspiring mission. I had in the past had an academic internship at Southern College of Optometry and shadowed at private and public practices, but I had yet to work for a nonprofit, so Church Health seemed to be the perfect and natural fit.

I look forward to learning all I can from my colleagues in the eye clinic and becoming a part of the Church Health family and mission. After my service, I hope to take a part of the Church Health mission with me and serve as a vision therapist who will provide affordable vision therapy and eye services to those who may not be able to afford them.

I enjoy reading, listening to music, and rock climbing at MemphisRox. I also enjoy volunteering at MemphisRox when I have time and hope to volunteer more once I have this whole adulting business sorted. I am also a huge fan of movies and anything Harry Potter or Marvel related.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
I am looking forward to learning more about nonprofits and having the opportunity to work for one for a year. I am also looking forward to learning all I can from the eye clinic team and Church Health. I am excited and ready to pursue this year as a scholar and am open and ready to serve, learn, and grow.

Susannah Smith
Hometown: Knoxville, TN
College: University of Tennessee (Knoxville)
Major: Biological Sciences

Biography
I was born and raised in Knoxville, TN. I continued my education at the University of Tennessee where I majored in biological sciences and minored in psychology. Needless to say, I’m thrilled to start exploring Memphis! Throughout college, I volunteered as a school nurse in inner city elementary schools, so catering to an under-served population is very dear to my heart. I’m excited to be a part of the Church Health community because of the people that we serve, the mission we carry, and the people I get to work along side with.

My long-term goal is to get into medical school, where I can become a physician in order to continue serving those around me.

In my spare time I enjoy hiking, going to concerts, going to the lake, and hanging out with friends. I’m eager to see what this new city and new opportunity have in store for me over the next year.

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
I’m mostly looking forward to gaining more experience with one on one patient care.

Madison Swain
College: Spelman College
Major: Biology (2019)

Biography
I was born in Birmingham, Alabama and my family moved to Collierville,TN when I was six months old. I am the baby of the family with two older siblings (Alex and Kelli) and two huge dogs (Jaden and Rehza). I speak Portuguese and Latin. I am a huge Harry Potter fan, avid reader, true thalassophile and nature lover. I grew up dancing, cheerleading and playing soccer, soccer is still my pride and joy.

However, my brother who has special needs (a rare syndrome of epilepsy) has always been my motivation to pursue medicine. I attended Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and majored in Biology on a pre-med track. I plan to attend medical school within the next two years and aspire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. During my time at Spelman, I interned at Church Health in 2018 in Healthcare Administration, which was my first introduction to the Church Health organization. Once I was aware of the important work that Church Health was doing in the Memphis community, I was eager to be apart of their Scholars program.

I am most looking forward to learning and gaining experience in a clinical setting from a faith-based nonprofit perspective. To me the Scholars program is so unique in creating a space for transition and growth during a crazy time of graduating and getting to the next step. I am so grateful to Church Health and the Scholars program for having me this year.

Estou muito animado para estar com todos voces!

What are you looking forward to this coming year?
I am hoping to gain more medical exposure in a clinical setting, and I’m looking forward to experiencing the field of health care from a perspective I am not used to and being able to include what I have learned into my next level of learning as well as in the community.
