I hope that each of you had a restful Memorial Day weekend.
As we approach the seventh Sunday of Easter, Jesus prays for unity among the believers, and Paul has an encounter with a fortune teller in the lectionary passages for this week. Those scriptures include: Acts 16:16-34, Psalm 97, Revelation 22:12-14, 16-17, 20-21, John 17:20-26.
John 17:20-21 – “I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
Did Jesus anticipate the number of Christian denominations that have developed over the centuries? What about the breadth of world religions? Regardless of the way you answer that question, I believe this passage reminds us that we should remember and emphasize those ideas that bind us together as people of faith.
Gracious God, help us to be more tolerant and accepting of one another. Amen.
