The lectionary selections for this week include: Amos 8:1-12; Psalm 52; Colossians 1:15-28 and Luke 10:38-42. Alternate selections include Genesis 18:1-10a and Psalm 15.
Amos 8:4-7 – Hear this, you that trample on the needy, and bring ruin to the poor of the land saying, “When will the new moon be over so that we may sell grain; and the Sabbath, so that we may offer wheat for sale? We will make the ephah small and the shekel great, and practice deceit with false balances, buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings of wheat.” The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.
This passage clearly reminds us that God cares about the poor. But it is also clear that God cares about both our attitudes and actions toward the poor.
Loving God, may your Spirit inform our thoughts and actions toward others each and every day. Amen.
