Actually, the answer is “A”—the South
Actually, the answer is a little closer to home. The Southern states shoulder the largest burden of vision loss—by far.
Seventy-seven percent of counties with prevalent severe vision loss are located in the South, and much of the reason is, unfortunately, straightforward.
Severe vision loss is strongly correlated with poverty, which takes a heavy toll in the Southern states. Memphis—with a 25 percent poverty rate, compared to 12 percent nationally—is no exception.
Eye care, too often costly and deemed a “specialty” service by insurance companies, easily falls by the wayside, leading to preventable vision loss and even permanent blindness.
Church Health’s Eye Clinic is the only path for our neighbors in need to find eye care—and the waitlist for these critical services is growing quickly.
We’re now working with our supporters to expand the Eye Clinic’s capacity by 30 percent—that’s enough to help 1,000 more Memphians in need every year. We’re counting on your partnership to get this project done.
