Dr. Todd Chappell has spent his career bringing new life into the world. As a gynecologist specializing in minimally invasive surgery at Fertility Associates of Memphis, his days are often filled with complex procedures, high-stakes decisions, and the joy of helping families grow. But beyond his private practice, Dr. Chappell has dedicated himself to a mission that has shaped him both personally and professionally—volunteering at Church Health.
His journey with Church Health began long before he earned his medical degree. As a young aspiring doctor, he worked at the clinic in a role then called a clinic assistant, now known as a Church Health Scholar. That experience, he says, was transformative. “It really helped mold me into the person and physician that I am today,” he recalls.
After finishing his residency in 2009, he received a call from Dr. Scott Morris, the founder of Church Health. The clinic needed gynecological support, and Dr. Chappell didn’t hesitate. He began by performing surgeries for Church Health patients. By 2017, his commitment deepened, and he started seeing patients regularly at the Crosstown clinic.
For Dr. Chappell, volunteering is more than a professional obligation—it’s a calling. “The joy that comes from helping these patients is immeasurable,” he says. He speaks passionately about the people he serves, those who fall through the cracks of the healthcare system. These are individuals who work hard—restaurant servers, janitors, childcare providers—but cannot afford health insurance. They don’t seek handouts; they simply need access to affordable, quality care. And Church Health provides just that.
Balancing his full-time career and volunteer work might seem challenging, but Dr. Chappell insists that Church Health makes it easy. “One thing that’s very nice about volunteering here is you really don’t have a chance to get burned out,” he explains. “It’s just enough to allow you to give back without feeling overextended.”
When asked what makes Church Health unique, Dr. Chappell emphasizes its patient-centered approach. “You’re helping patients who aren’t looking for free care. They want healthcare and are willing to contribute what they can. These are the people who take care of us daily but don’t have access to affordable insurance.”
His message to those considering volunteering is simple: Don’t wait. “Join, become part of this family, and start right away. You will never give more than you receive by volunteering here.”
Dr. Chappell’s story is one of dedication and compassion. He embodies the spirit of Church Health—providing care not just as a physician, but as a neighbor, a mentor, and a friend to those in need. His journey serves as an inspiration to others, proving that even the busiest professionals can make a profound difference, one patient at a time.
