Romelia Gaddy knows her journey in life is dictated by her faith in God. When you ask her how a person can be healed, she’ll say “By what God enables in others.”
Through the MEMPHIS Plan, Romelia accessed the network of care Church Health offers with community partners like Methodist Cancer Institute at LeBonheur.
Retired launderer and great-grandmother to Nikieva and Jayden, Romelia’s faith was challenged in 2007 when she was faced with the rare diagnosis of urethral cancer.
Her healthcare team said developing a plan of care would take time.
“I told them, I’m going home to pray,” Romelia said, “’ When I come back, God will give you the knowledge to treat me.”
The next day, Romelia began her journey for two chemotherapy treatments and six weeks of radiation.
As faith is central to Romelia’s life, she thanks God healing was possible through Church Health and Church Health’s community partners at Methodist.
“I know it was God, but like I say, he works through the people,” Romelia said. “The biggest impact Church Health has made on me, it’s kindness and caring.”
Today, she remains strongly engaged with Church Health and her primary care provider Dr. Veronica Swannigan. She also credits her faith community including her precious prayer partner Ruby Lee and pastor of New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Frank E. Ray.
“I thank God for the doctors, and I thank God for the people bringing me through and letting me have comfort,” Romelia added. “God said he was sending me a comforter. So, I thank everybody for what they do for me.”
