What does a hardworking couple do when they can’t afford health insurance or large medical deductibles?
Meet the Butlers. Becky is a church office manager, and her husband, Larry, has been a self-employed construction worker and vinyl siding applicator for 36 years.
The industrious couple is committed to providing for their family and focused on being healthy enough to live to see their child graduate from college. With their limited income, they used to make tough financial choices that didn’t include health care.
“We didn’t go to doctors or dentists. Whatever our health problems were, we’d just bore through them,” said Becky.
In 2017, a medical crisis changed their perspective. Becky started experiencing extreme nerve pain in her limbs. She couldn’t eat or sleep properly and had lost her independence.
“I was living on chicken broth and baby food. It felt like my life stopped when all I could do was lie in bed.”

Now he walks and works with no pain at all. Without the MEMPHIS Plan, he would have applied for disability retirement. That would have crushed him because he would rather be working.
